The excellent rail network links Dehradun with other important places of India. The Shatabdi Express, Mussorie Express and the Dehradun-Mumbai Express cater to the rail transport between Dehradun and Delhi, Mussorie, Mumbai, Varanasi, Calcutta and Lucknow.
By Roadways:
Dehradun is well connected to other cities of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Delhi by regular bus services like Agra, Calcutta, Chennai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai and Delhi. There are road routes that connect Dehradun with tourist places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Shimla, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Nainital, Badrinath, Gaurikund, Gangotri, Kalsi and the Rajaji National Park.
About
Situated in the mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Dehradun is the capital of Uttaranchal. It is one of the most beautiful resorts in the sub mountain tracks of India, known for its scenic surroundings. The name Dehradun is a collection of two words "dera" meaning camp and " dun" meaning valley. Said to be one of the oldest cities in India, it is believed that Lord Rama and his brother did penance here for killing Ravana, the demon king.
During the 17th and 18th centuries Dehradun changed hands several times: Guru Ram Rai retreated here from Punjab, the Mughal Governor Najib-ud-Daula occupied it from 1757-1770 and the Gorkhas overran it on their westward expansion before ceding it to the British in 1815. Under the British, Dehradun became an elite town with many a fine institutions like Forest Research Institute, Doon School and Welham Schools for girls and boys, many more, like the ONGC and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Studies, were added in time.
History
Dehradun is one of the oldest cities in India. In the Vedic times, the Garhwal Mandal, of which Dehradun is a part, was known as the Kedar Khand. Legend has it that Guru Dronacharaya, a Brahmin teacher of warfare, considered Dehradun a place fit for meditation & worship and therefore, the valley of Doon was christened Drona Ashram, which means "The Abode of Drona". The written history of Dehradun dates back to 250 BC and King Ashokas inscription at Kalsi, on the outskirts of the city, is proof of this. There are 14 edicts carved on a rock and nearby is the site of three horse sacrifices by Raja Shilvarma of the Vrisheri dynasty. Large bricks with writing on them are laid out in the shape of a huge bird with a fire altar in the middle.
Weather
The hill resort of Dehradun is ideally located amongst the hills and experiences moderately pleasant climate throughout the year. The temperature hovers between 44.5°C and 16.7°C in the summers. While in the Winters Dehradun grows colder with the temperature varying between 23.6°C and 5.4°C. Dehradun is flocked by tourists all through the year. In summers it is the retreat from the plains and in winters it is the snow-time! You can enjoy the snow in the Garhwal Himalayas during November/December. April to July is the ideal time for a trip to the Doon valley and skip the heat and the dust of the Indian summer in the hill resort of Dehradun.

Dehradun is the place to be in for the nature lovers and the adventure seekers alike. The ski resort at Auli near Dehradun attracts enthusiasts from all over the country and abroad. The resort has skiing facilities like cable car, Ski lift, chair lift, snow-beaters et al. The valley of flowers, Har-ki-Doon, Dodital, and Pindari glacier etc. make excellent trekking routes from Dehradun.

Sahasradhara Waterfalls
Sahasradhara Waterfalls, located 14 km from Dehradun, is famous for its natural beauty and medicinal value. It is also a popular picnic spot. People come here in large numbers to enjoy the natural beauty and to bathe in the waterfall. Regular bus services are available from Dehradun. Best time to visit this waterfall is rainy season.

Established by the British the Institute is one of the finest of its kind in the world. All Forest Officers in India are trained here. This thickly forested sanctuary spreads all the way to Dehradun.
